Nobby and Richard book final spot

NOBBY Clarke and Richard Colman reached the final of the men's Winter Foursomes at Tiverton after a 2 and 1 win over club captain Colin Carey and Peter Garnsworthy on Saturday, February 27.
The course was so soggy after heavy overnight rain that new temporary greens had to be cut on some holes.
But that didn't put off Clarke, whose chipping and putting made the difference.
All-square after the 8th, Clarke and Colman made their decisive move by winning the 9th, 10th and 11th to go 3 up.
They lost the 14th but won the 15th after Garnsworthy threw his club in anger and it stuck up a tree.
Carey and Garnsworthy kept their hopes alive by winning the 16th but a half in bogeys on the 17th ensured Clarke and Colman progressed.
Clarke will meet his brother Graham in the final if he and Mike Cottrell win their semi against Colin Baker and Bob Pincombe on Saturday.
Clarke and Cottrell pulled off a surprising 5 and 4 victory over much-fancied Martin Selby and Neil Carthew in the quarter-finals at the weekend.
Receiving six shots in total, Clarke and Cottrell were 3 up at the turn and won the 10th and 11th to extend their lead to five.
Selby and Carthew reduced the deficit with a birdie on the 12th but Clarke and Cottrell won the 13th and halved the 14th in bogeys to seal victory.

Tiverton have been handed a tricky tie away at Axe Cliff in the second round of the national Mail on Sunday Classic.
Tiverton, who won 4-1 at Taunton and Pickeridge last time out, must play the match by Sunday, March 21.

Captain duo in foursomes upset

CLUB captain Colin Carey and Peter Garnsworthy caused a big upset when they knocked out father and son Kelvin and Matt Woodgate in the quarter-finals of the men's Winter Foursomes at Tiverton on Saturday, February 20.
The Woodgates, last year's beaten finalists and much fancied to go one better this time, were 2 up at one stage before a tense closing stretch.
All square after 13, they halved the 14th in pars, the 15th in birdies and then the 16th, where Carey and Garnsworthy received a shot.
A par on the 17th was good enough to put Carey and Garnsworthy 1 up and a birdie on the last sealed a 2 up victory, despite their opponents being only two over par for the round.
The win completed a good week for Garnsworthy, who was confirmed as Tiverton's captain for 2012 at the club's AGM on Thursday.
Carey and Garnsworthy, who beat Roger Stevens and Paul Bayley in the second round, will now meet Nobby Clarke and Richard Colman in the semi-finals.
Colin Baker and Bob Pincombe are also through to the last four after they made good use of their shot holes in a 5 and 4 win over Simon Budden and Colin Taylor.
They will now face either Graham Clarke and Mike Cottrell or Martin Selby and Neil Carthew.
Selby and Carthew overcame former champions Peter Boax and Mark Sangster 3 and 2 in an impressive display, which included two twos and a series of pars on their shot holes.
Semi-final draw:
Top half
– Graham Clarke and Mike Cottrell or Martin Selby and Neil Carthew v Colin Baker and Bob Pincombe.
Bottom half
– Colin Carey and Peter Garnsworthy v Nobby Clarke and Richard Colman.

Tivvy deliver goods in Mail triumph

TIVERTON surged into the second round of the Mail on Sunday national knock-out tournament thanks to an excellent 4-1 win away against Taunton and Pickeridge on Valentine's Day.
Team captain Simon Budden picked a strong side of single-figure handicappers and they delivered the goods on a glorious winter's day at a highly impressive Pickeridge course.
Rhys Cruse (4) led the side out on a course he plays twice a week through his golf studies with Richard Huish College.
The teenager produced level-par figures to storm back from two down against 13-handicapper D Potter and eventually win 4 and 2.
Martin Selby (6) had a good battle with N Grout (6) and was all-square after 14.
But Selby lost the 15th to a birdie then the 16th to go dormie two down, and a half on the 17th meant he succumbed 2 and 1.
Lee Scott (7) went two down to Chris Brice (7), who stepped in at the last minute after Pickeridge's nominated third player failed to turn up and instead was on his way to Cornwall at the time his captain phoned him to discover his whereabouts.
Scott birdied the 15th, won the 16th unexpectedly after finding the bunker and was gifted the 17th, before a half on the 18th meant he took the match 1 up.
Jim Bray (4) came out of his usual winter hibernation to go three up after 11 against Pickeridge team captain Alan Keenan (5), having been three under par except for one hole.
Bray three-putted the 16th when two would have won him the match 3 and 2, but he didn't have to wait long for the victory as Keenan suffered tree trouble on the tough 17th and conceded a 3 and 1 defeat with the Tiverton man on the edge of the green for two.
Simon Waddington (3) took control of his game against A Johnston (5) and looked to be heading for a comfortable victory at dormie four up.

Nobby and Richard storm into semis

NOBBY Clarke and Richard Colman became the first pair to reach the semi-finals of the men's Winter Foursomes after they beat Heath Ellis and Ian Budden 4 and 3 on Sunday, February 14.
Kelvin and Matt Woodgate will be hoping to meet them in the bottom half of the draw, but they must first wait to see who wins the second-round clash between club captain Colin Carey and Peter Garnsworthy plus Roger Stevens and Paul Bayley.
In the top half, Simon Budden and Colin Taylor edged into the quarter-finals after beating juniors Eddie Sangster and Harry Callahan on the 19th hole on Saturday.
Budden and Taylor were gifted the play-off hole after the youngsters twice went out of bounds and conceded before their opponents had even played their second shot.
Budden and Taylor will now face Colin Baker and Bob Pincombe, who knocked out Neil Forward and Ced Gibbons.
Martin Selby and Neil Carthew saw off Noel Thomas and Dave Wright in the first round and will now meet Peter Boax and Mark Sangster, with the winners taking on Graham Clarke and Mike Cottrell in the last eight.
Semi-final draw:
 Top half
– Graham Clarke and Mike Cottrell or Martin Selby and Neil Carthew or Peter Boax and Mark Sangster v Colin Baker and Bob Pincombe or Simon Budden and Colin Taylor.
 Bottom half
– Colin Carey and Peter Garnsworthy or Roger Stevens and Paul Bayley or Kelvin and Matt Woodgate v Nobby Clarke and Richard Colman.

Defending champs crash out

DEFENDING champions John Hanson and Steve Garland were knocked out of the men's Winter Foursomes at Tiverton in the first round after losing to junior captain Harry Callahan and fellow youngster Eddie Sangster.
The juniors will now face Simon Budden and club steward Colin Taylor in the last 16 after they disposed of 28-handicappers Martin Taggart and Malcolm Lock on Saturday, February 6.
The only pair to have booked their place in the quarter-finals in the top half of the draw are Graham Clarke and Mike Cottrell.
They successfully claimed their first-round game after Bob Clayden and Ian Maclure failed to turn up, even though they hadn't put their names up to play.
Clarke and Cottrell defeated Rhys Cruse and Phil Moulding in the second round but will have to wait to find out their next opponents.
Also in the top half, Colin Baker and Bob Pincombe beat Ed Whall and Mike Eastmond.
Only one quarter-final match-up is known, with Nobby Clarke and Richard Colman meeting Heath Ellis and Ian Budden in the bottom half.
Clarke and Colman went through in strange circumstances after Roger Millett and Dave Horn had to pull out for preferring to play in the three-man team event at the club on Saturday rather than the foursomes.
Ellis and Budden overcame Mike Chorley and Trevor Parker.
Father and son Kelvin and Matt Woodgate are also in the last eight after beating Paul Steele and Tony Bodgin in the first round and then Shaun Hughes and Mark Green.
Roger Stevens and Paul Bayley saw off Daniel Perry and Lawrence Blake.
Quarter-final draw:
Top half
– Graham Clarke and Mike Cottrell v Noel Thomas and Dave Wright or Martin Selby and Neil Carthew or Peter Boax and Mark Sangster; Colin Baker and Bob Pincombe or Neil Forward and Ced Gibbons v Eddie Sangster and Harry Callahan or Simon Budden and Colin Taylor.
Bottom half – Colin Carey and Peter Garnsworthy or Roger Stevens and Paul Bayley v Kelvin and Matt Woodgate; Nobby Clarke and Richard Colman v Heath Ellis and Ian Budden.

Simon Young, Les Hartley and Richard Furlonger posted 89 stableford points to win the men's team event on Saturday, February 6.
John Phillips, Mark Stanbury and Ray McIntosh came second with 88 while father and son Nick and Harry Konig linked up with Richard Moyes to finish third on 87.

Teenager Nicola Chilcott posted 38 points on temporary greens to win the ladies' rearranged January Stableford on Wednesday, February 3.
The 16-handicapper finished 10 clear of Rosemary Perry and Alison Hilton in the Silver Division.
Shirley Ward was the overall runner-up with 37 and finished seven ahead of Marian Stevens in Bronze Division One.
Sue Buchanan's score of 33 won her the Bronze Division Two prize by one from Elaine Cullen.
In the 11-hole stableford, Chris Bacon took the honours with 22 points while Ivy Radford came second on 18.
