Jess the ticket

IN-FORM youngster Jessica Bradley hit her latest high when she won the ladies’ May Par at Tiverton on Wednesday to get her handicap cut from six to five.
The 14-year-old compiled a score of +4 thanks to three birdies, at the 6th, 10th and 15th.
It continues a sparkling run of form which has seen her earn a call-up for the Devon
ladies first team.
Bradley headed the 50-strong May Par field and qualified for the ladies’ Kirkman Dish alongside runner-up Helen Scriven.
After seeing her handicap cut last week, Scriven carded birdies on the 10th and 17th on her way to a score of +2 and another reduction from 12 to 11.
Results: Silver Division – 1 Jess Bradley (+4); 2 Helen Scriven (+2); 3 Hannah Grant (-1). Bronze Division One – 1 Antonina Hajduk (+1); 2 Jane Walton (-3); 3 Joan Reed (-5). Bronze Division Two – 1 Elizabeth Marriott (-1); 2 Enid Harding (-2); 3 Janet Burgess (-4).

The ladies’ Sheelah Creasy side were on the end of a 5-2 loss against Saunton.
Wins for team organiser Gail Stuckey (3 and 2) and Gina Churchill (4 and 3) were tempered by defeats for Joan Reed (1 down), Trish Bending (6 and 5), Rosemary Venner (4 and 3), Pat Batchelor (2 and 1) and Evelyn Riley (6 and 5).
They will be hoping for better fortunes when Tiverton face a return match at Torquay on Monday, having beaten the South Devon outfit 5-2 at home.

The ladies’ Devon League team suffered a 4-2 defeat at Holsworthy, where individual victories for Antonina Hajduk (3 and 2) and Marian Stevens (4 and 2) proved in vain.
Linda Knowles (5 and 4), Shirley Ward (2 down), Janet Simpson (3 and 1) and Shirley Turner (2 and 1) completed the line-up.

James Lambden and Jane Walton posted 39 stableford points to collect the mixed George Carver Salver on a windy Bank Holiday Monday.
The greensomes competition attracted 24 pairs, with Tony and Karen Allsopp second on 36 on a countback from Chris and Annette Cardwell.
The only twos came from John and Judy Phripp on 4th and Adrian and Kay Beaumont on the 9th.
Meanwhile, more pairs are being sought to play in the mixed Bader Cup on Sunday, June 17. That is the revised date after the event was abandoned in May due to heavy rain.
The winners will qualify for a regional final at Stover and the victors there go on to play in Portugal.

Tiverton’s juniors started their East Devon League campaign with a 4-2 defeat at Sidmouth on Tuesday.
Tiverton were without star men
Jack Ridge and Ollie Taylor as they had to be on duty at the club’s Palairet Trophy practice at Teignmouth.
Promising left-hander Harry Callahan, playing off 34, was only 15 over gross when he wrapped up his 3 and 2 victory while Abbie Moyes was also a winner.
Opening three Matt Woodgate, Will Blundell, a seven-handicapper who has recently joined the club from Padbrook
Park, and Rhys Cruse were defeated along with up-and-coming debutant James Bradley.

We’re ready, says captain

TIVERTON captain Colin Hart believes his men have put in all the preparation they can ahead of their Palairet Trophy campaign and that it will leave a perfect platform for the club’s future in the competition.
Tiverton launch their bid for an elusive first ever trophy with a second-round clash against Yelverton at Teignmouth next Sunday.
Hart has put his squad through their paces with six warm-up matches against other Palairet teams plus three other competitive practices.
“After many months of planning and nine practice matches of one kind or another, I was extremely pleased to get to the stage of announcing the squad and team to play Yelverton,” said Hart.
“I don't think there is much else we could have done in preparation and we now have a strong team that can go out and give their best on match day.”
Hart was going to wait until after the Flowers Cup on Saturday to name his five pairs, two reserves and other squad members but eventually chose to do so four days early.
The skipper’s plan was to put two of his leading four-handicappers – Simon Waddington, Richard Jessop and Jim Bray – together in the opening pair.
It is Waddington and Jessop who will lead the way at 1.30pm while Bray slots in alongside teenager Ollie Taylor in a surprise second pairing.
The slimline duo of Jason Frost and Jack Ridge linked up regularly in the warm-ups and they tee off third while Bob Tye and Tony Allsopp, who enjoyed a successful practice campaign together, are in the fourth match.
Winter League runners-up Kelvin Woodgate and son Matt Woodgate complete the line-up off fifth, as Hart goes with a side all off a handicap of seven or less. Last year’s captain Mark Sangster and Gerry Franklin are the reserves.
“There has been tremendous support from the players for our extensive preparations and that has meant many hours of commitment,” said Hart.
“I have also been fortunate in being able to call on the services of vice-captain Peter Boax and past captain Mike Jewell for help in selection and general advice.
“Apart from what happens this year, and I have a strong belief that we can do well, we now have a good system of preparation and continuity of management in place that will stand us in good stead in the coming years in increasing the strength of our squad.”
Tiverton had a bye in the first round while West Devon side Yelverton overcame Elfordleigh 4-1 to book their place at Teignmouth.
Tiverton team: 1 Simon Waddington (4) and Richard Jessop (4); 2 Jim Bray (4) and Ollie Taylor (6); 3 Jason Frost (5) and Jack Ridge (6); 4 Bob Tye (6) and Tony Allsopp (6); 5 Kelvin Woodgate (6) and Matt Woodgate (7).
Reserves: Mark Sangster (7) and Gerry Franklin (6). Other initial squad members: Nathan Whitehouse (5), Ian Brierley (6) and Steve Buchanan (11). Nominated advisor: Mike Jewell.

Robin Sansom hit a superb nett 64 to land the men’s Flowers Cup on Saturday and earn a handicap reduction from 11 to 10.
Adrian Beaumont took second place on 66 by one from Keith Williams, club chairman Paul Steele and Jim Bray, who was three under gross after 15 but fell back to level par.
Results: 1 Robin Sansom (75-11=64); 2 Adrian Beaumont (75-9=66); 3 Keith Williams (79-12=67); 4 Paul Steele (84-17=67); 5 Jim Bray (71-4=67); 6 Neil Carthew (83-15=68); 7 Tony Allsopp (74-6=68); 8 Lee Davey (78-10=68); 9 Gerry Franklin (76-7=69); 10 Terry Barwell (82-13=69).

David Grieve had his handicap cut from 11 to 10 after firing an excellent nett 66 to win the veterans’ May Medal by six shots on Tuesday.
Noel Thomas, Ted Littlejohns and Graham Dyson were left in his wake on 72 while Tom Nattrass and Colin Constable completed the top six on 73.

Another uphill battle for vets

TIVERTON’S seniors face another tough challenge if they are to make further progress in this year's Emerton-Court Trophy, after they suffered a 3½-1½ defeat at Sidmouth in a keenly-contested first-leg tie.
They now find themselves in the same position as they were after their first game against Saunton last month, when they fought back at home to take the match 6-4.
They will have to be equally efficient in the return leg at Tiverton on Tuesday, May 29, when they will need three and a half points to draw and another half point for victory and progress into the next round.
Veterans' section captain David Green said: "This is a course for local knowledge. It is very tricky. I'm happy to take this result away to Tiverton for the next leg."
Tiverton, without several key players through injuries and other reasons, were probably fortunate to do as well as they did.
In the first match, Gerry Franklin (7) and John Phripp (10) were two down early on and clawed back to go ahead on the 15th.
They lost the next two holes to be one down approaching the 18th, where the visitors mustered a fine birdie to win the hole and gain a share of the point.
The only Tiverton victory came from Peter Stuckey (11) and Terry Barwell (12).
Again the supporters’ nerves were put to the test as a three-hole lead after 12 disappeared by the 16th through fine play by Sidmouth and some critical mistakes by the Tiverton pair. However, after a half on the 17th, a birdie at 18 brought the win.
Rod Wiltshire (9) and Derrick Barrett (9) lost one down after a tremendous battle, with both pairs taking the lead on several occasions.
Playing captain Mike Hurley (10) and Alan Probetts (16) were soundly beaten 5 and 4 while David Holland (14) and David Jack (15) lost 3 and 1 despite being three up on the 9th.

Don Hellings emerged victorious in the veterans’ May Stableford with 39 points.

Results: 1 Don Hellings (39); 2 Bob Taylor (37); 3 Robert Jowitt (35); 4 Noel Thomas (35); 5 Ian Maclure (34); 6 Arthur Ablett (32).

Sheila Stark won the ladies’ Silver Division Cup this week after adding a nett 72 in the second round on Wednesday to her 73 on Monday for an aggregate of 145. She saw her handicap cut from 18 to 17 after her first-round efforts.
The runner-up was Sheila Marwood, whose scores of 75 and 74 for a 149 total put her ahead of Val Walker, with identical rounds, on a countback.
The battle for the Bronze Division Cup saw three players land on a total of 154 for the two rounds.
The winner on a countback was Antonina Hajduk, whose figures of 78 and 76 for an aggregate of 154 were matched exactly by Joan Reed. Marian Stevens finished third after two 77s.
Jo Lloyd-Davies, in the Silver Division, and Anne Warne, in the Bronze Division, both shot a 68 in round one and saw their handicaps reduced, but were unable to complete the task in the second 18.
Lloyd-Davies’ handicap was cut from 15 to 13 while Warne’s came down from 22 to 20, taking her into the Silver Division. Helen Scriven won round two with a 69 to reduce her handicap from 13 to 12.
Round one results: Silver Division – 1 Jo Lloyd-Davies (83-15=68); 2 Charlotte Snow (85-13=72); 3 Sheila Stark (91-18=73). Bronze Division One – 1 Anne Warne (90-22=68); 2 Trish Bending (98-23=75); 3 Irene Byng (97-22=75). Bronze Division Two – 1 Sandra Hart (109-36=73); 2 Kath White (109-30=79).
Round two results: Silver Division – 1 Helen Scriven (82-13=69); 2 Sheila Stark (89-17=72); 3 Sheila Marwood (94-20=74). Bronze Division One – 1 Rosemary Venner (99-25=74); 2 Linda Knowles (98-22=76); 3 Antonina Hajduk (102-26=76).
Qualifiers for Hamilton Cup: Jo Lloyd-Davies, Anne Warne and Helen Scriven.

Club captain Colin Hart announced his team early for the Palairet Trophy tie against Yelverton at Teignmouth next Sunday (1.30pm
).
Hart was going to wait until after the Flowers Cup on Saturday to name his five pairs, two reserves and other squad members but chose to do so on Tuesday, a day after his foursomes matchplay get-together at the club.
Tiverton team: 1 Simon Waddington (4) and Richard Jessop (4); 2 Jim Bray (4) and Ollie Taylor (6); 3 Jason Frost (5) and Jack Ridge (6); 4 Bob Tye (6) and Tony Allsopp (6); 5 Kelvin Woodgate (6) and Matt Woodgate (7).
Reserves: Mark Sangster (7) and Gerry Franklin (6). Other initial squad members: Nathan Whitehouse (5), Ian Brierley (6) and Steve Buchanan (11). Nominated advisor: Mike Jewell.

20 May 2007 Downes but not out

IT was a good day for Downes Crediton in the Men’s 3-Ball Open at Tiverton on Saturday.

Jackie Fuller (29) also notched 35 in winning Bronze Division Two. Annie Mills (32) was second on 28 while Margot Seamer (36), playing in her first competition having just got a handicap, was third on 26.
There was a separate, fourball better-ball competition played on Wednesday – the NSPCC Ladies' Golf Classic.
Judy Phripp (17) and Linda Knowles (22) scored 38 stableford points off ¾ handicap to win while Lesley Crossley (14) and Kay Beaumont (14) were the runners-up on 35 after a countback.

Keith Williams maintained his good run of form to shoot 40 points and win the men’s May Midweek Stableford on Monday.

13 May 2007

Slam Dunc

DUNCAN Floyde struck 40 stableford points in blustery conditions to win the men’s Hermes Shield at Tiverton on Saturday.
With the ground having been softened up by the rain, Floyde won by one from Lloyd Sampson, Tom Pilling and former captain David Ashworth, while Jack Frost’s 38 points gave him the Division One prize.
Results: Division One – 1 Jack Frost (38); 2 Ben Wessely (37); 3 Derrick Barrett (37); 4 Lee Davey (37); 5 John Phripp (37); 6 Mark Sangster (36). Division Two – 1 Duncan Floyde (40); 2 Lloyd Sampson (39); 3 Tom Pilling (39); 4 David Ashworth (39); 5 Marcus Webber (38); 6 Phil Cole (37).
Tiverton finalise their preparations for the Palairet Trophy second-round showdown against Yelverton with a foursomes matchplay competition over the front nine holes next Monday evening, followed by a squad meeting.
It will be a case of ‘any old irons’ because players won’t be allowed to use woods or rescue clubs, as captain Colin Hart tests his men’s game one last time.
“We will be attempting to put out pairings that have had success in the build-up matches but this will depend on player availability,” said Hart.
A final squad of about 14 will be announced on Wednesday, May 23 while Hart will name the team of five pairs and two reserves following the Flowers Cup on Saturday, May 26.
While Tiverton were enjoying a bye in the first round of the Palairet,
Dartmoor side Yelverton, as expected, overcame Elfordleigh 4-1 to book a match-up at Teignmouth on Sunday, June 3 (1.30pm).
Tiverton completed their programme of Palairet practice matches with a hard-fought 3-3 draw at home to Royal North Devon last Sunday.
It meant they finished the series with two wins, three losses and one half from their six games.
“The support from the squad for the matches and the short-game practice competitions in September and November has been terrific,” said Hart.
Tiverton’s men must overturn a nine-hole deficit at home if they are to beat Orchardleigh in their two-legged club match.
Tiverton were leading 13½-
12½ after seven of the eight matches were concluded in the away tie on Friday.
But they ended up 22½-13½ behind after Phil Moulding and John Sampson lost by 10 holes to one-legged Bill Savage and Pete Eastaff.
The mixed Bader Cup was cancelled on Sunday due to the heavy morning rain.

9 May 2007 Dunn and dusted
PHYLLIDA Dunn scored 35 points to win the ladies’ May Stableford in dismal rain at Tiverton on Wednesday.
The 15-handicapper qualified for the Goodwin Trophy after topping the Silver Division by one from Sue Norris.
Shirley Turner won Bronze Division One on 33, with Jane Walton second on 32, while the Bronze Division Two prize went to Carol Clark, whose 33 points beat nearest challenger Anne Franklin by three.
The ladies’ President’s Trophy II team enjoyed a 5½-1½ victory at home to Woodbury Park.
Sheila Ball (4 and 3), Chris Bacon (6 and 5), Rosemary Perry (3 and 2), Pat Higgins (4 and 2) and Ivy Radford (4 and 3) were comfortable winners while Jill Ford halved.

Teign Valley.

7 May 2007 Golfers’ festival fever -Jim Bray
Festival of Golf launch day

TIVERTON Golf Club officials unfurled a special 75th anniversary pennant to mark the launch of their upcoming festival week.
Almost 75 years ago to the day, then town mayor WE Shapland and legendary Tiverton course designer James Braid opened the club by unveiling a royal blue pennant below the Union Jack on its flagstaff.
While the pennant back then was an old-fashioned shade with ‘TGC’ in white lettering, times have changed and a more customary green flag bearing the dates 1932-2007 flies proudly next to the clubhouse today.
The launch day signalled the start of ticket sales for the Festival of Golf week, which will grip the club next month.
The present Mayor of Tiverton and Sir Ian Amory, nephew of former club president Sir John Heathcoat-Amory, will be among the guests for the opening ceremony on Saturday, June 9.
”The Heathcoat-Amory family have been long-term benefactors of the club,” said current captain Colin Hart, who has been leading the preparations with his festival committee.
“The late Sir John was a founder member and but for his financial intervention at critical times in the club’s history, the whole venture might have folded.”
There will be a grand photo-shoot at
6pm on the opening day, when all members are invited to be part of the club’s anniversary picture, followed by a jazz evening and barbecue.
The week will feature competitions solely for members every day, with plenty to look forward to for men, ladies, juniors, veterans and mixed players.
The festival climaxes with a special two-day Braid’s Original tournament on June 15 and 16, when golfers from all sections of the club will play the course as it was originally laid out.
Saturday, June 16 will also feature a mass presentation of prizes for the week followed by music from
Phoenix.
Colin said: “On launch day the sale of tickets got off to a brisk start and members were quick to start signing up for competitions.
“It is going to be a good week and lots is going to happen. There will be something for everyone.”
A special souvenir brochure has been produced as part of the 75th anniversary celebrations.
It contains a brief history of the Post Hill club from around the time it was opened on
Saturday, May 28, 1932 to the present day, a programme of events for the festival week and an appraisal of the course and its challenges by double record holder Simon Waddington.
The history is well illustrated by a series of old and modern photos of the course, many of the latter taken by former club captain Mike Hurley.
“We have a club to be proud of and it didn’t happen easily,” said Colin.
“The next milestone will be the centenary in 2032, and I am sure that over the intervening years we will continue to improve our course and facilities to consolidate Tiverton as one of the finest places to play golf in the South West.
“I know that members will give great support to festival week and I wish them all good golfing and happy memories.”

6 May 2007 Tivvy end series with a draw - Jim Bray

TIVERTON completed their programme of Palairet Trophy practice matches with a hard-fought 3-3 draw at home to Royal North Devon on Sunday.
It meant Colin Hart's team finished the series with two wins, three losses and one half from their six games.
"It would have been good to have won but I still found the result satisfactory," said Hart, whose side were 4-2 victors in the away fixture.
"The lost match at Dawlish and the halved match on Sunday each had a close one-hole deciding match that could have turned the result in our favour."
Opening pair Jim Bray (4) and Jason Frost (5), who must do battle in the first round of the Tommy Tucker Scratch Cup, might have edged it Tiverton's way but lost to former Devon star Mark Evans (1) and Jamie Baker (2) in a roller-coaster game.
The Tiverton duo won three holes on the trot to go one up after 16 but lost the last two to slip to a frustrating 1 down defeat.
Richard Jessop (4) and Nathan Whitehouse (5) went out of bounds from the tee on the 2nd and 3rd and were four down after opponents Tim Coates (3) and Nick Keen (5) birdied the 5th, and they never really recovered as they were sunk 5 and 4.
Bob Tye (6) and Tony Allsopp (6) took a close third match 2 up against John Mounce (4) and Adam Crouch (10).
Their opponents recovered from the trees time and time again but not on the 18th, however, where one more drive into the woods on the left found lady luck had departed.
Kelvin Woodgate (6) and Ian Brierley (6) combined well again as they overcame David Lloyd (5) and Robert Ley (8) 2 and 1.
Woodgate and Brierley missed a seven-foot birdie chance to close out the match on the 15th before RND snatched a hole back with a solid par on 16.
But the RND pair drove down the left side of the 17th and a half in bogeys meant the match was over.
Gerry Franklin (6) and Matt Woodgate (8) stayed with Paul Griffin (6) and Richard Hughes (9) early on but RND forged ahead and never relinquished their lead. The Tiverton duo were out of sorts with their putters and eventually succumbed 4 and 3.
Tiverton's anchor men, Ollie Taylor (6) and Steve Buchanan (11), were a first-time pairing but they didn't take long to settle, winning the first five holes on their way to a 4 and 3 success against Ted Tithecott (10) and Dave Mellor (9).
Tiverton, who had a bye in the first round of the Palairet proper, will meet Yelverton on June 3 after the West Devon side, as expected, beat Elfordleigh 4-1 on Sunday.
Hart has arranged a squad get-together and in-house practice for Monday, May 21 and he will then meet vice-captain Peter Boax and assistant Mike Jewell to finalise the five-pair team for the showdown with Yelverton.
"All in all these hard competitive matches have been invaluable," the captain said. "They have enabled me to try out plenty of combinations and I now feel I have plenty of pairing options I can select from with confidence.
"The players have gained important experience in testing conditions and played much more golf than usual in the foursomes format."

Lee 'Sid' Davey produced his best ever round in a competition to win the Johnstone Cup on Saturday.
A steady gross 78 brought the big hitter a nett 65, a countback victory over Mark Griffiths, a handicap cut from 13 to 12 and a celebratory night out in Tiverton.
Having won a wager to get his handicap lower than his uncle Ricky, 15-year-old Rhys Cruse overtook his dad Alby after a 66 brought him down from 12 to 11.
General manager Richard Jessop posted the lowest gross score of the day, a 72, while up-and-coming Lloyd Sampson racked up an 11 on the par-five 3rd before recovering brilliantly to return a nett 68 for fourth place in Division Two.
Results: Division One - 1 Lee Davey (78-13=65); 2 Rhys Cruse (78-12=66); 3 Ian Loudon (76-10=66); 4 Phil Dyer (74-8=66); 5 Keith Williams (81-14=67); 6 Richard Jessop (72-4=68). Division Two - 1 Mark Griffiths (81-16=65); 2 Denis Hooper (88-20=68); 3 John Phillips (87-19=68); 4 Lloyd Sampson (88-20=68); 5 Mike Hawkins (86-18=68); 6 Ron Stonebridge (88-16=72).

Tiverton's mixed team collected a 5½-4½ win over East Devon in their return match at home on Sunday, despite missing a number of potential players who were at a lunch party for former lady captains hosted by Lesley Crossley.
"As we halved the away match, overall we did pretty well," said mixed organiser Jane Walton.
Results (Tiverton names first): 1 Adrian Beaumont (9) and Kay Beaumont (14) beat John Pulman (6) and Edna Devetta (17) 1 up; 2 Alan Snow (10) and Charlotte Snow (13) halved with Derek Hunt (15) and Elspeth Hunt (12); 3 John Phripp (10) and Judy Phripp (17) lost to Chris Greetham (9) and Wendy Greetham (19), 2 and 1; 4 Gavin Scott (8) and Jane Walton (21) beat Des Mathews (18) and Penny Mathews (13), 7 and 6; 5 David Holland (13) and Bridget Holland (19) lost to Tony Holden (13) and Barbara Holden (18), 1 down; 6 Bert Bracken (13) and Dori Bracken (21) beat David Brittain (23) and Dianna Brittain (13), 2 and 1; 7 Jim Walton (19) and Tracy Banbury (24) beat Mike Bates (15) and Kath Copp (17), 2 and 1; 8 Richard Moyes (13) and Amanda Moyes (32) lost to Godfrey Kent (12) and Alison Kent (26), 5 and 3; 9 Bryan Hall (25) and Liz Hall (20) lost to Ken Watson (21) and Barbara Watson (18); 10 Bob Clayden (19) and Sandra Hart (36) beat Maurice Watkins (24) and Patricia Watkins (28), 7 and 6.

The ladies' Devon League team suffered a disappointing 5-1 defeat against Teign Valley on Friday.

4 May 2007 Tivvy's ace turnaround - Jim Bray

TIVERTON'S veterans stormed to a 4-1 victory in the second leg to turn the tables on Saunton and move through to the next round of the Emerton-Court Trophy.
Tiverton were 3-2 down after the away leg but a good all-round performance on Monday saw them win three matches and halve the other two at home.
Saunton, who were one of the favourites for the county's senior knock-out title, came to Tiverton with six changes to the side that won on the North Devon coast.
"We thought we had the depth of quality to prevail despite the changes we had to make," said Saunton's non-playing captain Denis Davy.
However, the home players' steady and determined showing put the contest beyond Saunton before the final two pairs completed their rounds.
The first point came from David Neilson (12) and Peter Stuckey (11), who took the lead on the 1st and gradually increased their control of the match to win 5 and 4.
Then came a great fightback from Tiverton's number one pairing of Gerry Franklin (6) and Ian Brierley (6), who earned a half.
The home pair were two down after seven, drew level at the 13th and then had a ding-dong duel right to the end.
Second pair Derrick Barrett (9) and Rod Wiltshire (9) also had to recover from an early three-hole deficit before coming home 2 and 1 winners.
Match captain Mike Hurley (10) and John Phripp (10) were behind in the early stages as well but four birdies put them ahead by the 12th, a lead they built on to win 2 and 1.
The final pair of Roger Tucker (11) and Terry Barwell (13) looked like winning their encounter but stumbled at the last, losing the 18th for a half point.
"It was a splendid effort to win so well against a strong club like Saunton," said Bob Keating, Tiverton's non-playing manager.
Reserve player David Jack completed a good day at the office for Tiverton by having a hole-in-one on the 4th. "That was rather special," he said.
