Handy Andys make it through

CLUB champion Tony Allsopp and James Lambden racked up 41 points to win the men's Winter Foursomes stableford qualifier at Tiverton on Saturday – but they will not be progressing to the knock-out stages.
The duo opted out of entering the Winter Foursomes proper so runners-up Andy Brice and Andy Lovell, who missed out by one spot last time out, went through as the leading qualifiers.
They scored 40 points on temporary greens to edge out Bill Tobin and Graham Dyson on a countback.
The top eight Winter Foursomes entrants, who all had 36 points or more, join the eight pairs who had already qualified for the last 32.
The other two qualifiers take place before Christmas, with the knock-out stages getting under way in the new year.
Saturday's qualifiers: 1 Andy Brice and Andy Lovell (40); 2 Bill Tobin and Graham Dyson (40); 3 Jeremy Millett and Colin Baker (38); 4 Dave Ashworth and Steve Cox (37); 5 Terry Barwell and Norman Ford (37); 6 Roy Ireland and Derek Cruwys (36); 7 Paul Bayley and Danny McArdle (36); 8 Andy Pryce and Alby Cruse (36).

In-form Hannah Grant fired 36 points off her one handicap to claim the ladies' November Stableford on Wednesday.
Grant's exact handicap was reduced because the standard scratch went up to 77, but it did not affect her playing handicap.
Jill Ford was one behind on 40, giving her the Bronze Division One prize and a handicap cut from 22 to 21.
Elizabeth Marriott's handicap came down from 29 to 28 after she topped Bronze Division Two with 34.
Results: Silver Division – 1 Hannah Grant (36); 2 Annette Cardwell (32); 3 Val Walker (32). Bronze Division One – 1 Jill Ford (35); 2 Chris Bacon (33); 3 Irene Byng (32). Bronze Division Two – 1 Elizabeth Marriott (34); 2 Kath White (33); 3 Kathryn Hall (29).

Ian Maclure won the veterans' Duckworth Salver last Tuesday on a countback from Derrick Barrett, after both players finished with 37 stableford points.
John Lyon took third place on 36 on a countback from Bob Taylor while Noel Thomas and Ray Robinson both came in with 34.

14 November 2007 Taylor-made victory

OLLIE Taylor continued his return to form by winning the men’s Midweek Meat Fayre at Tiverton on Monday.
The teenager posted 39 stableford points to finish two clear of Shaun White and three ahead of Mark Sangster, whose handicap is now six, and Rob Gubby, better known as Bucks Fizz lead singer Bobby G.
Results: Division One – 1 Ollie Taylor (39); 2 Mark Sangster (36); 3 Rob Gubby (36); 4 Tony Playford (35); 5 Ian Maclure (35); 6 Colin Baker (34).
Division Two – 1 Shaun White (37); 2 Ced Gibbons (34); 3 Tom Molloy (34); 4 Dave Horn (33); 5 Denis Hooper (31); 6 Arthur Govier (30).

11 November 2007 Duo bounce back to qualify

JIM Bray and Lloyd Sampson recovered from a dreadful start to clinch victory in the first Winter Foursomes qualifier at Tiverton on Saturday.
The duo fired a level-par nett 71 in windy conditions to become the first pair to book their place in the knock-out stages, which get under way in the New Year.
That had looked highly unlikely after four-handicapper Bray and Sampson, off 12, frittered shots away around the greens on the 2nd and 3rd, where they walked off with triple bogey and double bogey sevens.
But immediate birdies on the 4th and 5th gave them hope, and a series of pars either side of a double bogey six on the 11th ended up earning them a one-shot victory over former club captains Derek Reed and Alan Cooper.
Simon Budden had asked to play with Summer Foursomes and Order of Merit winner Sampson in all four winter qualifiers but was away in Cornwall on Saturday, so Bray stood in and left Budden needing to find a new partner to try to qualify with.
The top eight pairs in each of the qualifiers, who have not already reached the knock-out stages, will go through to the last 32. Saturday’s medal will be followed by a stableford, a medalford and a bogey before Christmas.
Results and qualifiers: 1 Jim Bray and Lloyd Sampson (71); 2 Derek Reed and Alan Cooper (72); 3 Ian Louden and Andy Brown (72); 4 David Simpson and Heath Ellis; 5 Paul Steele and Keith Chilcott; 6 David Grieve and Tim Packer; 7 Roger Millett and Dave Horn; 8 Tom Molloy and Ian Budden.

8 November 2007 Jean storms through

IN-FORM Jean Granger stormed to a four-point victory in the rearranged ladies’ August Stableford at Tiverton on Wednesday.
She plundered 40 points to comfortably win Bronze Division Two, and overall she was four ahead of Bronze Division One pair Ann Pearcey and Tracy Banbury.
Granger, who has been close to the top several times in recent weeks, saw her handicap cut by three from 34 to 31 as the standard scratch went up to 76.
The event had been rescheduled due to thunder and lightning in August.
Results: Silver Division – 1 Judy Phripp (35); 2 Sue Norris (32); 3 Rachel Bray (32).
Bronze Division One – 1 Ann Pearcey (36); 2 Tracy Banbury (36); 3 Marian Stevens (33).
Bronze Division Two – 1 Jean Granger (40); 2 Kath White (32); 3 Elizabeth Marriott (32).

Easy meat for Sammo

JOHN Sampson was the only player to break into the 40s as he won the men’s Meat Fayre at Tiverton on Saturday.
Sampson – nicknamed Sammo – hit 40 stableford points to finish one clear of junior organiser and former club captain Mark Sangster, who beat David Grieve to the Division One prize on a countback.
Results: Division One – 1 Mark Sangster (39); 2 David Grieve (39); 3 Paul Steele (37); 4 Andy Frankum (35); 5 Richard Moyes (35); 6 Lloyd Sampson (35).
Division Two – 1 John Sampson (40); 2 Shaun White (37); 3 Les Hartley (36); 4 Tony Wood-Wright (36); 5 Peter Walker (35); 6 Tim Packer (35).

Club chairman and next year’s vice-captain Paul Steele won the 61st annual eclectic competition for men after recording the best score in the event for more than two decades. Steele’s score of 54 – 17 under the card – left John Phillips, Matt Woodgate, Eric Cole and John Phripp having to battle it out for the back-up prizes.
Under the competition format, players can complete a maximum of five rounds during
September and October, with their best score on each individual hole counting towards the overall score.
Woodgate’s father Kelvin had the lowest scratch total with 66, John Hanson picked up the prize for the best front nine and Steve Hosford was the victor for the back nine.
Any potential handicap adjustments will be considered at the next competitions committee meeting next week.
