Tiverton tops for fundraising in Britain
TIVERTON chairman Roger Tucker (left) and general manager Richard Jessop (right) collect the Gus Payne Trophy from former Ryder Cup captain Bernard Gallacher, the vice-president of the Golf Foundation. ROGER Tucker and Richard Jessop are pictured with Bernard Gallacher and the other prizewinners at the Golf Foundation's annual awards ceremony at Wentworth.

TIVERTON Golf Club has won a prestigious national award for its dedication to fundraising.
Tiverton raised more money for the Golf Foundation in 2009 than any other club in Britain and Ireland.
Members were asked to donate £2 each to the charity on top of their annual subscription, raising £1,540 in the process.
Only 10 clubs topped the £1,000 mark and Tiverton won the Gus Payne Trophy for being the leading donor.
Club chairman Roger Tucker and general manager Richard Jessop collected the trophy at the Golf Foundation's annual awards ceremony at Wentworth, Surrey, on Wednesday, May 19.
Both men said it was “an honour” to represent the club at the event and paid tribute to its members.
Mr Tucker said: “We followed in the footsteps of many great clubs – last year's winners of the award were the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews.
“The trophy is now on display in the clubhouse and I hope all our members feel a sense of pride when they see it in the realisation we won it through their generosity.
“Let's see if we can retain it next year!”
Tiverton could be in line to keep the award after Mr Jessop handed over a further cheque for £2,000 at the ceremony – the sum of the club's fundraising efforts for the Golf Foundation in 2010.
The event took place the day before Wentworth staged the European Tour's flagship tournament – the BMW PGA Championship.
The awards were presented by Bernard Gallacher, the 1995 Ryder Cup-winning captain and vice-president of the Golf Foundation, in front of a packed audience in the club's ballroom.
Volunteers, professionals, junior organisers, school teachers and local authority officers were honoured for their work to support and develop grassroots junior golf.
Mike Round, chief executive of the Golf Foundation, said: “All our award winners are hugely deserving of the accolade as they have given so much of their time, enthusiasm and expertise to help young golfers from all backgrounds.
“Their dedication to supporting the future of the game has been of the highest order.”
Tiverton's fundraising efforts have boosted Golf Roots, which provides opportunities for children and young people in areas where the sport had not previously been considered an option.
The project was launched in 2003 and is now the largest and most successful junior golf development scheme in the British Isles.
