Tivvy dumped out of Palairet
TIVERTON suffered more Palairet Trophy
heartache after they were dumped out of this year's tournament in the
third round by Saunton Artisans at a wet and windy Royal North Devon on
Sunday, July 4.
Tiverton, who were giving between five and nine shots in every game,
missed out on a place in the quarter-finals after once again coming out on
the wrong end of a 3-2 scoreline against higher handicappers.
Although the conditions may have favoured Saunton, who are based just
across the estuary, this was another poor result for a side who have yet
to lift Devon's premier club trophy and haven't challenged for it for a
decade.
Vice-captain Tony Allsopp made three changes to the team that eased past
Budleigh Town at Teign Valley in the previous round.
Two-handicapper Chris Audin missed out because he qualified for the final
day of a big event in Nottinghamshire on Sunday while Peter Boax (9) was
on holiday on Majorca.
Audin's place was taken by junior organiser Mark Sangster (7), who
partnered one of his protegees, Rhys Cruse (4), in the second pair.
Boax had won 7 and 5 with junior Ben Hearn (8) in the last round but
Allsopp (7) gave the inexperienced 13-year-old a rest and played himself,
a regular at RND, with the in-form Mike Jewell (8) in the final game.
With the scores level at 2-2, the result came down to their match against
Dave Jarvis (16) and Paul Lake (17).
After battling back from two down to be all-square at the turn, Allsopp
and Jewell then lost the 10th, 12th and 13th to go three behind.
Lake missed an 18-inch putt on the 15th for a bogey and a 4 and 3 victory
before the portly Jarvis dumped his tee shot into the reeds on the par-3
16th, enabling the Tiverton duo to take the hole with a four and get back
to dormie two down.
With the artisans looking shaky, Lake's 30-yard fifth shot on the 17th was
heading for the bunker at the back of the green but the ball somehow
stopped on the down slope 15 feet past the pin.
Allsopp and Jewell found trouble down the left and after they made a bogey
six, Jarvis putted up to the hole side to ensure a seven, nett six and a 2
and 1 win.
Tiverton's two points came from the same two pairs who won in last year's
3-2 defeat against Hele Park at Sidmouth.
Birdies on the 1st and 9th meant first pair Jim Bray (3) and Simon
Waddington (3) were level par and five up at the turn against Ade Ley (6)
and Mark Pedler (11).
They consolidated their lead and took the match 6 and 4 after Pedler
thinned his tee shot into the reeds on the par-3 14th.
Fourth pair Bob Tye (6) and Martin Selby (6) also looked set for a
convincing win but a late wobble almost let Mark Davis (12) and Paul
Standen (14) back in.
Tye and Selby were one under par after nine and three up before winning
the 10th and 11th to go five ahead.
The artisans won four of the next six holes to take the game up the 18th,
but Tye and Selby halved it in pars to edge home 1 up.
The other two matches ended in comfortable wins for Saunton.
Cruse and Sangster were seven down after nine against Rob Scattergood (7)
and Paul Hill (13) before winning the 10th, 12th and 13th to reduce the
deficit to four.
Three missed short putts for wins cost them on the day, including on the
11th, while Hill's expertise on the greens helped Saunton ease to a 4 and
3 win.
Ollie Taylor (5) and Matt Woodgate (6) lost the first two holes to Steve
Flood (6) and Martin Fernell (15), who were five ahead after nine and then
dormie five up.
Taylor and Woodgate won the 14th but Fernell hit a three-wood to 10 feet
on the 15th to seal a 5 and 3 victory.
Tiverton's defeat brought back memories of their 3-2 loss to Ilfracombe at
RND a few years ago, when their opponents' ball rolled over a bridge
rather than into the ditch on the 18th and they made a par to clinch the
deciding game. |

Invitation at Tiverton on Saturday, July 3.
Taylor and Heath, who plays at Padbrook Park, shot a 10-under nett 61 to
finish two clear of Jon Cockbain and P Sluggett (Holsworthy).
Graham Clarke and P Gillard (The Park) had a 64 to come third on a
countback from Nick Conabeare and J Frost (Aldershot) and Paul Bowler and
G Ticehurst (Dawlish Warren).
John Ford (Taunton and Pickeridge) was nearest the pin in the 9th while
Mark Sangster (Tiverton) claimed the prize on the 18th.
A birdie on the 13th helped Kathy White
compile an amazing score of +6 to win the ladies' June Par on Wednesday,
June 30.
White qualified for the Kirkman Dish after beating off strong competition
from Amanda Moyes, Christine Young and Clare Fayers, who all scored +5.
A total of 63 players took part and the standard scratch was 73.

Clare Fayers (+5).
Tiverton's ladies have qualified for the
quarter-finals of the Sheelah Creasy Bowl, to be played at Dawlish Warren
on August 6.
In their last two matches, Tiverton beat Great Torrington 5-2 at home on
Monday, June 28 and lost 4-3 away at Tavistock on Friday, July 2 to seal
their passage.
Duncan Ferrier scored an amazing 43
stableford points to win the veterans' four-club competition on Tuesday,
June 29.
Results: 1 Duncan Ferrier (43); 2 Roger Norton (38); 3 Tony Evans
(38); 4 Trevor Parker (37); 5 Terry Barwell (37); 6 Bill Tobin (37). |
